UX Design: Rework

UX Research

I worked alongside a UI/UX Senior Designer as a UX Researcher to delve into the game and its largest friction points. I was promoted to UX Designer at the end of my probationary period after demonstrating competency in UX design through documentation and proposed solutions.

The main task was to clean up the UI/UX to help transition the product to tablet and app store.

Each screen, feature, and piece of UI was investigated, and documented, and possible solutions were presented. We worked directly with the existing team to find any frustrations within the team towards the project and did our best to direct attention towards those too.

It was in the end decided to clear up the UI/UX to be as clear and concise as possible to help onboard new users on tablet and clean up the overall experience for PC players.

Arrow and Unit Movement

Previous Design

Redesign

Clarified what units moved, how many, and where. Incorporating feedback from the development team on technical limitations and the player bases feedback on the current mechanics.

In the end we cleaned the lines and introduced iconography. The smallest addition with the biggest impact was a selection state on units.

The result changes and quality of life fixes were received positively by both the leadership team at Beamdog and community.

Unit Purchasing & Info

Redesign

Information was initially buried in the different windows of the game and difficult to access. We made the addition of tooltips to make information on units easier to access and more visually comprehendible.

To achieve this we introduced tabs and clear signage indicating amounts purchased and the amount of available funds remaining.

Game Progression & War Diary

Redesign

Initially, in a separate window, we moved the war diary to a tab. Giving the player better access to make strategic moves without the cumbersome act of searching through windows and hiding the screen from view.
